Ever Wonder What Products a Dietitian Uses?
I get a TON of questions about what products I use and recommend for anything from food products, to skin care, to non-toxic cleaning products, the list goes on!
Here at Nutrition Vixen, we’re talking about indulging in life the healthy way, not just food. Most of us don’t think about the products we use on our skin, to wash our hair, to clean the house, etc. These ALL have effects on our bodies and hormone levels, and can contribute to your healthy weight loss efforts.
To make things simple, I’ve created a “product recommendations” list below so that you can see what I personally use and recommend to my clients, family and friends! Use the toggles below to expand the section you are interested in!
*Keep in mind that there are products, especially supplements, that I refuse to recommend without first knowing your medical history, lifestyle, etc. When I work with clients I take their supplement regimen very seriously and carefully consider all factors. For personalized supplementation recommendations you can book a call with me here.
I travel ALL the time, so I’ve become an expert in travel snacks and staying healthy on the road. It’s so important to find products that are low in sodium and as minimally processed as possible. Here are my “staples” I cannot travel without! (These are also great to have at work in case of emergencies)
This is a plant-based protein powder that I absolutely love. These individual packs are great when you can’t get to a meal fast enough and you just need something to hold you over. The vanilla flavor is my favorite but feel free to branch out to the chocolate as well! Click here to order!
An absolute staple in my everyday life. Collagen has so many benefits for your hair, skin, nails, gut health, basically your whole body! This powder is colorless, odorless, and tasteless and packs 9g of protein. When I’m on the road I bring these individual packs with me and mix it with my coffee! I promise you cannot taste it, and it mixes really well without any gritty textures. Click here to order!
Finding grass-fed, non-GMO, low-sodium, nitrate and nitrite free jerky is almost impossible…that is until Lorissa’s Kitchen. LOVE this product for traveling especially if I have no access to protein. These are an amazing on-the-go snack, and they have chicken products as well! Click here to order!
Nuts are an excellent snack, bottom line! Opt for a raw and unsalted version if possible to avoid the inflammatory oils and excess sodium. I love the blue diamond raw almond packs, great snack in a pinch that’s full of healthy fats, fiber and a little protein! Click here to order!
Who doesn’t love almond butter?! I love having these on hand to spread onto a rice cake, eat with an apple, or just squeeze the pouch right into my mouth! I love Justin’s because they have flavored almond butter (vanilla, honey, etc.) that don’t go overboard with the sugar. Click here to get these on amazon.
Love love love these! They are so low in sodium, my favorite flavor is the Teriyaki! Seaweed is an excellent source of iodine which helps to support thyroid function, bam! Click here to order these babies!
When it comes to granola, it’s really hard to find something low in sugar and something gluten free. (I have a gluten intolerance so I have to stick to GF!). Not to mention, most granolas have a serving size of 1/4-1/3 cup and we usually end up eating way more than that. If it says 10g of sugar per 1/4 cup that doesn’t sound so bad, but most people will eat 1 cup or more which could be 40+ grams of sugar! Yikes! I love Purely Elizabeth brand because it is super low in sugar and gluten free! Click here to get this awesome treat!
My #1 protein powder pick is Vega One! This is probably my most asked question of all time, which protein powder is the best…It’s a clean product that is low in sugar and I always recommend this to my clients as a plant-based option. I love using this for shakes or overnight oatmeal recipes, or just to have on the go or after a workout! Grab this from the Vega Website Here.
I am obsessed, and I mean obsessed with this collagen powder. It’s colorless, odorless, tasteless, and it mixes really well without grit or chunks. I mix this with my coffee in the morning, add it to shakes, oatmeal or soups, and let me tell you this stuff is GOLD. As we age, our collagen production goes down, so supplementing with this is a great way to keep your gut, hair, skin, nails and weight in check! Click here to get your hands on the gold!
The ONLY amino complex I will ever recommend. I’ve never used a more clean product than this and I recommend it to anyone that works with me. Thorne products in general are top notch when it comes to quality supplementation, and their BCAAs are no exception. I drink these once per day in between meals, in the morning, or during a workout. It helps to stabilize blood sugars and keep you burning that fat! Click here to order these!
Dr. Axe’s “Ancient Nutrition” supplements are another good option, especially the bone broth collagen! I personally use the Further Food brand but I often get asked if the Dr. Axe products are good and the answer is yes! You can check out this collagen and other products here.
It’s a good idea to make sure you are taking a good quality probiotic every single day to help balance out the good and bad bacteria in your gut. This brand in particular is my favorite because it contains 30 billion CFUs. Get yours here!
Are you starting to tell I like collagen?? Here it is again, mostly because it has so many functions! The collagen helps to rebuild the mucosal lining in the digestive tract, keeping the gut healthy. This will also help your ability to digest and absorb food more efficiently. Get your hands on the collagen here.
One of my favorite secrets for gut health – activated charcoal! I always make sure to have a few capsules in my purse just incase I get in a sticky food situation. If you know you are going to be eating fattier foods or foods that cause digestive troubles, take two of these before you eat to help alleviate the digestive distress. The charcoal binds to the toxins and helps to flush them out! The Bulletproof brand is your best bet, check it out here.
Glutamine is the one amino acid that the mucosal lining of the digestive tract is made out of, so supplementing with this can often be helpful in restoring gut health. It is a colorless, odorless and tasteless powder just like the collagen, and will mix easily with water, shakes, etc. I typically recommend this NOW Foods brand.
I love candles. I think I pretty much always have them burning in my house…if I’m home, there is a candle lit somewhere I promise. They are such a simple way to increase the vibration and the atmosphere in your home. The smells are amazing and the flickering of the light is calming. My favorite candle in this whole world is the Bath & Body Eucalyptus Spearmint Aromatherapy Candle!
When I make a customized plan for my clients, 90% of the time there will be a section that says “epsom salt baths – mandatory!” If you have a tub, I highly recommend taking a bath at least twice per week. Not only are they relaxing, but if you use the right products you can really enhance the experience. I always use epsom salt and/or Dr. Teals bubble bath (which has epsom salt in it already). Epsom salt is an excellent source of magnesium which is so important for muscle recovery and proper sleep. Most of the population is deficient in magnesium, so bathing in epsom salt can be a really great way to get it in without having to take a supplement. Try taking a bath at least twice per week using the epsom salt and/or epsom salt bubbles (best brand here) before you go to bed in the evening. (I love this Epsoak salt because it’s cheap for a lot!)
Herbal teas are a great way to wind down and improve your mood. Instead of reaching for that 3rd or 4th cup of coffee in the middle of the day, try this Yogi Stress Relief Tea instead!
I have an oil diffuser that sits on my desk, and I use different scented oils for different purposes. I love lavender for calm, or lemongrass for energy and productivity. Oil diffusers are cheap and they are another way to increase the atmosphere and vibration in the house. You know when you walk into a massage place or a yoga studio and there is that really calming smell? You can get that same effect in your home with a diffuser! Check out this diffuser I have right here and it comes with a great essential oil collection as well!
Ladies, we all need our chocolate from time to time! I’m a human being just like you and sometimes I just NEED something sweet. Instead of reaching for a snickers bar, try indulging in something healthier and full of antioxidants like dark chocolate. I personally eat the 90% dark, but if that’s too much for you, start with a 70% and work your way up. Stick to the 1 oz. serving and remember to savor it, letting it melt in your mouth and making an experience out of it. Here is my favorite Lindt 90% Dark Chocolate Bar!
Another atmosphere enhancer! I love my salt lamp so so so much. It’s just like the candle or the oil diffuser, it gives off positive vibes. The soft glow of the lamp is so soothing and relaxing, I like to use it in the morning when I don’t like a lot of light or stimulation, or right before bed for a calming effect. Here’s the one I use!
Drinking herbal teas before bed is an excellent way to wind down for a good night’s sleep. I love Yogi brand teas, they are the BEST. This bedtime one has soothing and calming herbs to promote relaxation. Just the act of sipping on something warm before bed helps us to start to relax as well, and the aroma is amazing! Get yourself this tea here.
It’s always best to sleep in the darkest room possible! If you don’t have blackout curtains, having an eye pillow can help block out the light. I love this one that has the lavender scent. You warm it up in the microwave and the aroma relaxes you as you fall asleep. I often wear it as I meditate before bed and I’m out like a light! Get your pillow here!
When needed, I recommend taking 3-5mg of melatonin about 30-60 minutes before sleep. Melatonin is our sleep hormone, and it works opposite of cortisol (our stress hormone). When stress is high, melatonin is low, and vise versa. With the amount of stress we are under these days, sometimes it’s okay to give your body the melatonin it needs through supplementation. Be careful with this though, only take this when you know you can sleep for at least 7 hours or you will feel groggy the next morning. Obviously only take this at night before bed and never before driving! My favorite is the NOW Foods brand, you can get it here.
A good mattress matters for a good night’s sleep. I love my Tempurpedic and I will never ever own anything else in my life, ever. There are plenty of good mattress brands out there, but I don’t think anything really tops the quality and durability of the Tempurpedic. It’s an investment for sure, but it lasts forever and the quality of sleep is priceless. Visit the Tempurpedic Store here!
I carry my shaker bottle with me everywhere I go. There is no excuse not to have water with you! Whenever I leave the house I fill it up and go, and then I always have a bottle with me to refill if I need to or if I need a protein shake. Get yourself a blender bottle here!
I’ll admit it, I’m one of those people that has a hard time drinking plain water…BORING! So I always carry around these Bigelow Green Tea Bags to put into my water with my shaker bottle. It brews cold, so you don’t need hot water and you can get 2-3 refills out of it! My favorite flavors are peach and mint!
These are great because you can enhance the flavor of your water with just about anything you like! You can add mint, basil, lemon, lime, fresh fruit, anything you want to! This will increase the likelihood of you drinking water because it will taste good, and the herbs and fruits have added benefits as well! This is one of the best diffuser water bottles I’ve come across.
This little gadget is a lifesaver if you can’t remember to drink water! It tracks when you drink and reminds you to drink before dehydration sets in! It straps onto your water bottle, super easy and convenient. Get one here!
Like I mentioned above, I don’t recommend specific supplements without first knowing someone’s medical background and their current lifestyle. I believe in supplementing as little as humanly possible, and that most of what we need should come from good nutrition first, and then consider supplementation. If you want a personalized supplement plan from me, book a call here.
With that being said, there is really only one company I recommend supplements from, and that is Thorne Research. They are an amazing company that provides clean products, the best I’ve seen. So if you are going to buy supplements, always look at Thorne first! Click here to browse their products!
Lab testing is a great way to tell what’s going on inside the body, and discover the underlying issues as to why you are exhibiting certain symptoms or issues. I often have my clients undergo certain lab tests depending on their background. Knowledge is power! Here are the ones I recommend most:
Stress has become one of the biggest underlying factors to disease, weight gain and poor overall health. We live in a stressful world, and our bodies weren’t made to handle this kind of chronic stress. Eventually this takes a toll on the metabolism and the adrenal glands, and the body begins to slowly revolt.
Our adrenal glands are two tiny glands that sit atop our kidneys, responsible for handling all of our stress. When these little guys get overworked, bad things start to happen inside the body, and hormone fluctuations start to occur causing a range of symptoms such as:
- Feeling tired but wired
- Chronic fatigue
- Hard time getting going in the morning without caffeine
- Sugar cravings, especially mid-afternoon
- Energy dips and spikes
- Feeling irritable, anxious or depressed
If this sounds like you, you may want to consider a stress test to see how your adrenal glands are functioning. Thorne offers an at-home stress kit that is simple and easy to do. It’s not a blood draw, it’s actually a saliva test! All you do is get the kit shipped to your home, perform the test according to instructions, mail it back and then receive your results and recommendations.
If you are unsure or have questions, you can book a call with me or contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
PinnerTest – Food Intolerance Testing
I’m sure you’ve heard the term “food intolerance” floating around these days. It’s not a fad or a trend though, food intolerances are a real thing and actually quite harmful to the body if left undiagnosed.
A food intolerance is different than a food allergy. A food allergy causes an immediate response in the body like anaphylactic shock, rashes, swelling, etc. and usually requires immediate attention or even hospitalization.
A food intolerance is different, and the symptoms can actually take up to 4 days to present themselves. This is why food intolerances are often overlooked, because we don’t associate the way we feel right now with what we ate 4 days ago. A food intolerance simply means that your body lacks the enzymes to be able to break down the proteins found in certain foods.
Here are just a few symptoms of food intolerances:
- Weight gain or inability to lose weight
- Bloating, gas and other digestive issues
- Stomach pain or cramping
- Bloating and/or tiredness after meals
- Skin issues
- Chronic fatigue or sluggishness
- Inflammation and swelling
- …and much more
The PinnerTest is a simple at home test that allows you to know and understand your permanent food intolerances. These can even be so called “healthy” foods that you think are good for you, but are actually causing inflammation in your body! I have every single one of my clients take this test, because it helps us to identify what foods are causing issues for them. I don’t want to make someone a custom plan and include foods that are hurting them!
My personal intolerances are wheat, dairy and chickpeas. I was eating a lot of hummus and never understood why it made me so bloated until I took this test! All of my clients who do this test see immediate results when they cut out their intolerances…some even saw weight loss of 5 lbs over 2 weeks just from water retention!
If you want to know your food intolerances, please get on the phone with me so that we can order your test. Its an easy at home test, just a finger stick and done! Book a call with me to get yours now.
I work with a lot of clients who are high-level executives, busy moms, top athletes, etc…and these people are BUSY. I get it, I’m a busy person too, and sometimes the convenience of having groceries or meals delivered to your home is worth it. It’s certainly a better alternative to stopping for fast-food.
There are a ton of meal and grocery services out there now, it’s the new “thing”. There are so many it’s hard to make a decision, but here are my favorites that I recommend for a healthy lifestyle:
Unlimited grocery delivery for $14.99/mo? Yes please! If you don’t have time to grocery shop or just like the convenience of delivery, Amazon Fresh is a great way to go! They have a huge selection and you can get as much or as little as you want. There are really no restrictions or rules, so you can shop the way you would at the store. Add Amazon Fresh to your routine here!
Thrive Market is an excellent online grocery delivery service for pantry staples! You can get all of the organic and clean products you need without paying extra – their prices are great! You can get $25 off your first order too by clicking here.
You’ve seen this service everywhere I’m sure, and with good reason! Hello Fresh is a great option for those who don’t have the time or desire to shop and cook meals. You still have to cook it, but everything is literally spelled out and measured out. The recipes come in individuals bags with everything measured, prepped, and labeled. It comes with a recipe card to show to step-by-step instructions, all you have to do is follow the easy steps. I do wish they offered more customization for the meals, but overall it’s a great option if you pick the healthier meals! Get $30 off your first box here!
I really like e-meals because of the selection and customization. You can choose your meals from paleo, vegan, kid-friendly, low-sodium, you name it! The customization on this platform is amazing! It’s super easy too, you just select your meals and they take care of the rest with grocery delivery. You can try them out for 14 days free here.
I like this meal kit service because it allows for customization! You can choose your recipes, make your plans, vegetarian, pick the number of people and meals per week etc. I always advise people to be careful with meal kit delivery services, because while they are convenient, not every recipe is healthy. That’s why I like the ones where you can choose your meals, because you can choose the healthy options! You can get $35 off your first 3 orders from Marley Spoon by clicking here!
My most prized possession of kitchen tools, my Vitamix! What they say about this blender really is true, that it’s the best out there. From making shakes, to grinding oats into flour, to making soups, to making your own almond butter…this blender does it all! It makes meal prep and cooking so much easier. You don’t need the super expensive one either, the Vitamix 5200 is a great “getting started” blender. Is it a little pricey? Sure. But I’ve had mine for 7 years with no issues so that value pays for itself! Check it out here.
A meal prep essential! I batch cook for 3-5 days worth of meals so having good storage containers is a must! It’s so nice when you have a meal all ready to go in a Tupperware container and you just warm it up. Always buy and use glass containers when you can, this eliminates the exposure to BPA and toxins from plastic containers. I love the Pyrex brand, check it out here.
Let’s be honest, who likes to chop things? Not I!!! I’m obsessed with my food chopper, it takes hours off of meal prep time. Why wouldn’t you have one of these? Go get it now, seriously, you’ll thank me. Get the one I use here!
The bags are amazing! You will cut down on cost and exposure to toxins from plastic! These are reusable, washable, air-tight and freezer safe. You can make pre-made smoothie packs and stick them in the freezer so that your morning shakes are a breeze! Grab these here!
I love pasta, as do most people, but the insane amount of calories and carbohydrates in most pasta just isn’t worth it. I love my spiralizer because I can turn zucchini into noodles and mimic the pasta appeal! It’s so easy, you just stick it in there and turn! Get yourself one here.
I love this brand for skin care! They have amazing homemade lotions, soaps, hair products, scrubs, etc. I have SUPER sensitive skin and I am able to use their products without an issue. My favorite is the Sleepy Lotion, and they also have a great Happy Hippie Body Wash. But any of their products are amazing and non-toxic!
Cowshed Skin, Hair and Home
Cowshed is a UK based company that takes a holistic approach to their products, using only clean ingredients, never animal ingredients or animal testing. I love supporting these causes, and their products ROCK! Check out all their products by clicking the banner above!
Have you ever thought about the chemicals you are cleaning with and how this affects your health?? Our skin is our most absorptive property, so the chemicals and toxins that get on your skin will enter the bloodstream. This causes hormone fluctuations and a whole list of problems that we don’t even think about. I love the Method brand cleaning products because they are non-toxic, not over-powering when it comes to smells, and they get the cleaning job done really well. I use this multi-purpose cleaning spray of theirs for just about everything.
Just like the Method cleaner, this is a non-toxic cleaning spray. All of their products are great! I’m not as fond of the smell compared to Method, but these are still awesome products! Check them out here.
