“It is never too late. I’ve battled with weight my whole life and got pretty used to being the fat guy. A couple of years ago, I hit an all-time low. I weighed in at just under 350 lbs. I had a 46 inch waist, and I was in the worst shape of my life. I had also became very good at making excuses as to why I was overweight and unhealthy.

I was facing medical problems as well. Some of these problems were brought on by me and some were genetic. My weight was way too high, my blood pressure was elevated, my cholesterol was in the high end of normal, and my blood sugar levels were way too high as well.

This was rock bottom for me. A visit to my doctor quickly let me know I was slipping down a fatal slope. They wanted me to lose weight and begin a regimen of pills in order to prolong my life. They also recommended consulting with a registered dietitian. I was reluctant at first regarding a dietitian and skeptical in regard what someone else could tell me about my diet and how I should go about losing weight. I figured I understood as well as anyone, that as long as you take in fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. But despite so called ‘diet foods’ that I was eating, it just wasn’t working. I could never lose weight and keep it off.

Reluctantly, I scheduled my first meeting with the Nutrition Vixen, or as I know her, Heather Deranja. If you ask her, I would bet she would say I came in a little head strong. She quickly gained my trust and after to speaking with Heather, it was readily apparent that she knew quite a bit more about food intake, metabolism, exercise and overall health. I surrendered and promised I would follow her direction without fail, as long as it worked and I could see progress.

It didn’t take long. I ate well, I ate clean, and Heather has been offering professional direction for her sustainable program throughout my journey. She quickly lowered my cholesterol level without medication, my sugar levels have dropped to a normal level, and I take about 1/10th of the medication that I used to take. Oh, and I lost weight too, a lot of weight. I now weigh in at 240 lbs. and my waist is 10 inches smaller. I can also shop in any clothing store, which is a completely new experience for me.

So please, for you, for your health, and for your family, consider utilizing Heather’s services. I am stronger and healthier than I have ever been. She changed my life, and my family and I owe her a lot. Consider allowing Heather to help you too. You will be glad you did.” – Rob W

“The Workout is not enough! Heather shared information and strategies on what you eat and when you should eat it.  After three sessions with Heather, we have each lost 14 pounds in 7 weeks and our percent of body fat is trending downward. She has shared her knowledge about clean eating and it has changed our lives.  This is not a diet-it is a sustainable lifestyle.” – Sue and John

“Heather helped me lose 60 pounds. I’m not exaggerating. I was almost 380 pounds in January. I had no regard for what I ate. My family has a history of diabetes and heart disease. My grandmother and grandfather died of a heart attack in their early 70s. My dad is a type II diabetic, and I’m dangerously close to being there myself. Since I was a kid, I had no idea what healthy eating was. I had no guidance when choosing my meals and I ate however many calories I felt like eating with no regard to the consequences.

Skip to now. Now I do either 30 or 60 minutes on the treadmill and bike 6 days a week depending on that day’s lifting routine and everything I eat is carefully chosen. The hard part is actually doing it. It’s easy to say “I’m going to get healthy.” Everybody says that on December 31st. But what people don’t understand is that it sucks actually doing it, and that’s why they fail. They don’t anticipate the level of work that must be put in to make the change possible. What Heather did for me is something I will never forget. She helped me learn to stick with it. Heather didn’t teach me things like “limit carbs in the morning.” That’s something you can look up on the internet. You don’t need a professional to tell you that. Her job was to get me thinking right about food.” – Patrick M.

“I started working with Heather when I was having a hard time losing weight. Heather has been a wealth of information on proper nutrition.  She has helped me through different food sensitivities and issues that I had with incorporating certain foods in my meal plan.  Heather always has great ideas on new things to try and new recipes in order to incorporate additional nutrients into your meals.  Her friendly and encouraging attitude makes it easy to talk about whatever issues are holding you back.” – Christie W.

“After working with my personal trainer, he suggested that if I was serious about making this lifestyle change, I needed to meet with Heather for some nutrition coaching. After meeting, for just one hour, I had already felt accomplished. She studied my diet beforehand and had provided me with materials that, in turn, I could study to help me change my diet. The changes to my diet that Heather and I enacted together were nothing short of complimentary to my workouts. After making the nutrition changes, and just two weeks later, my body fat had decreased substantially. For someone who eats healthy AND CLEAN, I WAS ASTONISHED. Heather had even provided me with healthy tips for eating on my cheat days. Undoubtedly, without the help of Heather and her nutrition coaching, I wouldn’t be able to continue to decrease my percentage body fat and increase my muscle mass.” – Grant G.

“I never thought I was that unhealthy.  Looking back, I realize that a lot the problems I was having were because of not eating the right foods or staying fit.  I was having trouble focusing in school and sleeping at night.  I was actually starting to have trouble with sleep apnea.  My diet was comparable to that of a 5-year-old.  It took me a while to accept that fact that I needed to make a change, but I’m finally on the path to a healthier lifestyle.

Heather and I began a program to teach me how certain foods and supplements affected my health, my weight, and my energy levels. Heather kept reminding me how my workouts and food choices affected my results.  I am now 24 pounds lighter and my body fat percentage has decreased by 8%.    I feel good when I wake up in the morning and have energy to do what I want to do during the day, including my workouts.  My focus in school is much better, and my grades have improved.  I am happy with what I have accomplished.  Not only have I lost weight, but I’ve also adopted healthy habits that will stick with me for the rest of my life. – Brendan J.

“Working with Heather has been an invaluable component to helping me succeed on my weight loss journey.  I feel like my whole life has been spent trying to put a puzzle together and the pieces just not fitting.  The pieces being diets and exercise routines that produce few or limited and temporary results, always ending in frustration and defeat.  Heather’s knowledge and support has been the missing puzzle piece that completes the picture.

Heather changed the way I thought about diet and exercise.  Her advice wasn’t about rules and restrictions.  She emphasized taking one step at a time, making better choices and understanding how the choices you make affect your body and in turn, your results.  What I most appreciate is that she has been there to support and encourage me through the entire journey.  From day one she told me, “Slow and steady wins the race!”  She informed me that it would take about 12 weeks before I would see steady results on the scale as my metabolism got back on track from my unhealthy lifestyle.  Those were some very frustrating weeks for me but she was right…almost to the day!” – Kristina R.

“Heather has taught me so much about what food does for me. She helped me make changes to my eating habits. They were small, but easy steps to incorporate into my life. My family and I eat better and I certainly feel better as a result. Heather is also a great cook and gives me lots of delicious, healthy recipes to try. I have become much more thoughtful and conscientious about my eating as a result of working with Heather.” – Jennifer M.

“I have spine problems and I have to get soft tissue work done on my neck and shoulders twice a week. The hypersensitivity to pain was causing me to tense up during the soft tissue work to the point that it was ineffective and still left me in a position of not being able to lift weights because of the pain. Now that I have reduced my hypersensitivity to pain I can relax during the soft tissue work. This allows me to work out more often with less pain which is tremendously helping my muscle development. I thought I would not be able to compete in a physique competition again because of the pain. Now I am planning on making another run at it in 2015.

I would encourage everyone to seek knowledge regarding their health, and Heather is a great place to start with nutrition coaching. ‘I already know how to eat healthy, I just need to do it’ is a mindset that will leave a person still uninformed stuck in the same old routines. ‘You don’t know what you don’t know’ is a mindset that will allow you to unlock that missing puzzle piece that leads to accomplishing your weight loss and health goals. Heather can tell you what you don’t know and I would recommend her to anyone-even if it’s a person like myself who is already a fitness professional.” – David H.

“I had always considered myself a healthy person, so I was surprised at age 30 (I’m now 32) to be diagnosed with non-hormone receptive breast cancer without any family history or additional risk factors.  In addition to surgeries, and chemotherapy, at that time I turned to a registered dietitian recommended by my oncologist. I was eager to evaluate and change my eating habits for future cancer prevention and overall wellness.  What I got was disappointing and I knew I was wasting my time when the dietitian said my fairly regular morning bagel was a “good low fat option” – knowing very well that a high consumption of carbohydrates increases the risk for many cancers.

My experience with Heather isn’t even comparable. I immediately connected with her on a personal level during the first consultation.  She has helped me refine my eating habits to increase protein and healthy fats, reduce carb intake, and include lots of nutrient rich foods and cancer preventers.  Additionally, she recommended specific amino acids and multivitamins that have eliminated my daily energy crashes and sugar cravings.  With the same fitness regimen as before, I have started to see improvement in body fat reduction and increased lean muscle mass – which was my recent goal – but even better I am being proactive about eating nutritious foods for overall health and wellness.

I highly recommend Heather as your wellness coach.  Having a custom nutrition plan with a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist gives you assurance and accountability, greatly increasing your odds of success.” – Lindsey W.
