“It is never too late. I’ve battled with weight my whole life and got pretty used to being the fat guy. A couple of years ago, I hit an all-time low. I weighed in at just under 350 lbs. I had a 46 inch waist, and I was in the worst shape of my life. I had also became very good at making excuses as to why I was overweight and unhealthy.

I was facing medical problems as well. Some of these problems were brought on by me and some were genetic. My weight was way too high, my blood pressure was elevated, my cholesterol was in the high end of normal, and my blood sugar levels were way too high as well.

This was rock bottom for me. A visit to my doctor quickly let me know I was slipping down a fatal slope. They wanted me to lose weight and begin a regimen of pills in order to prolong my life. They also recommended consulting with a registered dietitian. I was reluctant at first regarding a dietitian and skeptical in regard what someone else could tell me about my diet and how I should go about losing weight. I figured I understood as well as anyone, that as long as you take in fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. But despite so called ‘diet foods’ that I was eating, it just wasn’t working. I could never lose weight and keep it off.

Reluctantly, I scheduled my first meeting with the Nutrition Vixen, or as I know her, Heather Deranja. If you ask her, I would bet she would say I came in a little head strong. She quickly gained my trust and after to speaking with Heather, it was readily apparent that she knew quite a bit more about food intake, metabolism, exercise and overall health. I surrendered and promised I would follow her direction without fail, as long as it worked and I could see progress.

It didn’t take long. I ate well, I ate clean, and Heather has been offering professional direction for her sustainable program throughout my journey. She quickly lowered my cholesterol level without medication, my sugar levels have dropped to a normal level, and I take about 1/10th of the medication that I used to take. Oh, and I lost weight too, a lot of weight. I now weigh in at 240 lbs. and my waist is 10 inches smaller. I can also shop in any clothing store, which is a completely new experience for me.

“I have spine problems and I have to get soft tissue work done on my neck and shoulders twice a week. The hypersensitivity to pain was causing me to tense up during the soft tissue work to the point that it was ineffective and still left me in a position of not being able to lift weights because of the pain. Now that I have reduced my hypersensitivity to pain I can relax during the soft tissue work. This allows me to work out more often with less pain which is tremendously helping my muscle development. “I had always considered myself a healthy person, so I was surprised at age 30 (I’m now 32) to be diagnosed with non-hormone receptive breast cancer without any family history or additional risk factors.  In addition to surgeries, and chemotherapy, at that time I turned to a registered dietitian recommended by my oncologist. I was eager to evaluate and change my eating habits for future cancer prevention and overall wellness.  What I got was disappointing and I knew I was wasting my time when the dietitian said my fairly regular morning bagel was a “good low fat option” – knowing very well that a high consumption of carbohydrates increases the risk for many cancers.
