Chili peppers are members of the capsicum family which includes a wide variety of peppers that vary in “spiciness” based on the amount of capsaicin they contain. Capsaicin is an antioxidant that has been shown to boost the metabolic rate and promote better overall health.

Fun Fact: Capsaicinoids, the chemicals that make chili peppers hot, act as a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory agent, and are therefore used in muscle patches for sore and aching muscles. and in lip plumpers!

In addition to the benefits of the capsaicin, chili peppers provide more vitamin A than any other food plant, and offer Vitamin B, Vitamin C, and significant amounts of iron, thiamine, niacin, magnesium, and riboflavin. One fresh medium sized green chili pepper actually has twice as much Vitamin C as a small orange!

There are 26 known species of chili peppers, and they originated in South America before spreading to Central and North America. Chili peppers are actually relatives of tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplants: they all belong to the nightshade family.

The chili pepper has been cultivated for centuries for both its culinary and medicinal uses, and has a multitude of health benefits and metabolism boosting properties.
